Campus Ministry- Bishop Ready High School

Freshmen 2008-2009

Living the Gospel Message (LTGM):

Every student is required to participate in service learning each year while attending Bishop Ready High School. Specific guidelines have been developed to recognize the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and social development of our students.

Service learning is integrated into the Theology classroom through reflection and discussion. A service learning test grade is recorded in Theology based on the hours completed, a written guided reflection and class discussion. In order to participate in all three components of the service learning test grade, service hours are due before Mother’s Day. It is strongly recommended that incoming students complete their service learning hours over the summer or early in the school year.

Service for any organization or activity at Bishop Ready High School is not acceptable for LTGM minimum requirements.

Guidelines for the completion of the freshmen requirement are as follows:

~ A minimum of 20 hours of service;

~ To be completed in the student's parish or faith community;

~ A maximum of 10 hours may be as altar server;

~ A maximum of 5 hours volunteering in parish activities such as coaching, assisting, score keeping, and selling refreshments at parish athletic events are allowed;

~ Bingo is not acceptable under any circumstance because of legal issues;

~ A parent or family member may not be the supervisor;

~ Service is not complete until a supervisor's evaluation is given to the student's freshmen Theology teacher;

~ No exceptions will be allowed from the above guidelines.

Supervisor evaluation forms and more information are available on the Bishop Ready High School homepage under Campus Ministry.

Students may begin their service hours after graduation from eighth grade and must have them completed by the last day of class, fourth quarter. Students may not work ahead in service hours (each year's service may not begin until after the completion of the current grade). Awards are given annually to students who perform service above and beyond that which is required.

Freshmen who are not up-to-date in their service requirement by the end of fourth quarter of freshman year will automatically become ineligible for all extra-curricular activities their sophomore year. Supervisor forms will not be accepted by anyone at Bishop Ready through the summer and the student will, therefore, remain ineligible until at least the first day of school. The affected student will need to return the appropriate forms on the first day of school the following year to their current Theology teacher. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY!

Parent-to-Parent:

Parents of all incoming students who have not previously participated in a Parent-to-Parent workshop are required to do so during their student's first year at Bishop Ready. Workshops are available in the early part of the school year. Cost of the eight-hour workshop is $10 and is paid at the first session. Participation by both parents/guardians is recommended but attendance by one is required.

Workshops for the 2008-2009 school year are scheduled for Thursdays, September 18 & 25 and February 12 & 19. More information concerning Parent-to-Parent will be mailed and be available on the Bishop Ready High School homepage in June. This mailing will include a postcard to be returned indicating date preference and/or previous attendance. The postcard will also give information for responding via e-mail. Please return this postcard or e-mail information promptly. Reminder of scheduled workshop can be made via e-mail if the parent/guardian wishes and supplies an e-mail address.

Parish Youth Ministry:

Students at Bishop Ready High School are urged to remain active in their local parish/church. A Catholic high school and its Theology classes do not replace parish community and involvement. Campus Ministry is available, though, to assist all students while at Bishop Ready and to enable students without parish youth ministry to be involved in Diocesan activities that require adult supervision.
