Living the Gospel Message (LTGM)
Senior Year Service Guidelines
Bishop Ready High School is committed to spiritual formation, academic distinction, and social responsibility in a Catholic tradition, wherein all persons are called to witness and reflect the gospel message of Jesus Christ.
The requirement for service learning across all grade levels supports our mission statement and is intended to engage students in activities that bring aid, comfort and care in a community setting.
Service for any organization or activity at Bishop Ready High School is not acceptable for LTGM minimum requirements; service must be completed in the community beyond Bishop Ready.
Guidelines for the completion of the Senior requirement are as follows:
- a minimum of 25 hours of service
- this service must be direct contact with the disadvantaged or marginalized
- all Senior hours must be completed in one agency
- volunteering at a for-profit business is never acceptable
- parent or family member may not be the supervisor
- service is not complete until the Supervisor’s Evaluation Form is given to the student’s Theology teacher. The Supervisor's Evaluation Form is available here.
- no exceptions are allowed. The guidelines above are firm.
Particularly recommended is service with soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters and mission/ work camps. Catholic, Lutheran, Jewish Social Services, JOIN, LifeCare Alliance, Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Mother M. Angeline Home, the Red Cross, Special Olympics, and West and South Side Free Stores are acceptable sites for the student to complete their service, AS LONG AS ALL HOURS ARE LOGGED IN ONE FACILITY ONLY AND THE HOURS MUST CONSIST OF DIRECT CONTACT HOURS WITH THE DISADVANTAGED OR MARGINALIZED.
Any questions concerning community service, including the appropriateness of an agency, should be addressed before beginning service. If you are unsure about the agency where you would like to volunteer, please check with a member of Campus Ministry or email either email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Students may begin their Senior service hours after the completion of the Junior year and must have them completed and Supervisor's Evaluation Form turned in by the last day of the third-quarter of their Senior year. It is recommended that the student conduct their service hours in measurable increments and complete them at least one week prior to the end of the third quarter so that the required reflection may take place. A third quarter Theology 20-point grade is assigned for on-time completion, verification of this requirement, and a completed reflection. This grade is an all or nothing grade.
Any Senior who does not complete all required service hours and reflection by the end of the third quarter will be ineligible for BRHS’s spring extracurricular activities, including sports and theatre. Senior students must fulfill all hours required for the number of years they have been in attendance at Bishop Ready High School prior to receiving a diploma and participating in graduation exercises.
Students who exceed the service requirement may be eligible for awards and scholarships. Many colleges look favorably on an applicant with a variety of community service experiences.
After the school year begins, evaluation forms may be hand-delivered to the appropriate Theology teacher. Bishop Ready High School is not responsible for evaluation forms delivered to the school during summer break. Please wait until the first day of regular classes to bring in evaluation forms.
All scenarios for completion of this requirement cannot be addressed in this document. Decisions of the Campus Ministry Team are final.
